The tools used to measure temperature are called thermometers. Their operation is based on the idea of thermal expansion, which states that materials expand or shrink in response to temperature variations. A temperature-sensing component, such as alcohol, mercury, or a thermocouple, is usually placed inside a calibrated scale in thermometers to measure temperature.
