Cutting, smoothing, and finishing metal surfaces, as well as precision mating of metal parts, with abrasive pastes. As in the lapping of gauges, valve seats, spacers, and mechanical seal faces, create an ultra smooth surface. Lapping tool marks off machine ways, bearing races, and shaft surfaces smooths out the surfaces. As with finishing gauges, tools, and dies, achieve accurate dimensions while preserving smooth surfaces. Lapping in automotive and industrial valves, running-in gears, and sharpening of shear-type cutters all require flawless matching of metal parts. Cleaning mould cavities and die surfaces without affecting the topology of the surfaces is a good example.
