PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Mitutoyo 227-217-20 is a digital outside micrometer designed for applications where the measuring force needs to be controlled rather than applied solely through a conventional fixed-force mechanism.

It covers 0.8–1.2" (20.32–30.48 mm), making it suitable for medium-size components that may deform, compress or change dimension when excessive measuring pressure is applied. Typical examples include plastic rollers, rubber-covered shafts, coated components, copper and aluminium rings, polymer parts and machined plastic spacers.

The adjustable measuring force mechanism provides five selectable settings: 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 N. This allows the operator to select an appropriate contact force for the material and application. The built-in constant-force mechanism holds the selected force when the measuring contact is reached.

The micrometer provides 0.00005" (0.001 mm) resolution and ±0.0001" instrumental accuracy. The carbide-tipped measuring faces have a micro-lapped finish, with 0.3 µm flatness and 2 µm parallelism. The Ø6.35 mm spindle is non-rotating, helping reduce movement against the measured surface.

The spindle advances 0.4" (10 mm) per revolution. The supplied standard bar is used for establishing the origin at the lower end of the measuring range. The ABSOLUTE linear scale retains the origin after power-off, reducing the need for repeated re-zeroing.

The LCD provides inch/mm conversion, while functions include Zero/ABS, Origin, Hold/Data, ON/OFF, low-voltage and counting-error alarms, and automatic power-off after approximately 20 minutes. Digimatic SPC output supports electronic transfer of readings to compatible data-collection systems.

An SR44 battery powers the micrometer, with the supplied fitted plastic case providing storage protection.

For a smaller 0.4–0.8" range, the Mitutoyo 227-216-20 can be considered. For very soft materials requiring a lower force range, the Mitutoyo 227-213-20 covers 0.6–1.2" with a 0.5–2.5 N measuring-force range.

WHO THIS PRODUCT IS BEST FOR

The Mitutoyo 227-217-20 is suited to machine shops, automotive and aerospace maintenance, plastics processing, oil and gas component inspection, production environments and calibration laboratories where measuring force can affect the result.

Typical applications include:

  • Plastic rollers and pulleys

  • Rubber-covered shafts

  • Coated pins and components

  • Copper and aluminium rings

  • Polymer seals

  • Machined plastic spacers

  • Hollow components

  • Precision parts that may deform under excessive contact force

The adjustable force range is particularly useful when different operators need to inspect similar components using a defined and repeatable measuring load.

HOW TO USE / HOW IT WORKS

  1. Set the origin: Place the supplied standard bar between the measuring faces and establish the reference position at the appropriate lower-end setting.

  2. Select the measuring force: Choose 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 N according to the workpiece material and measurement requirements.

  3. Position the component: Place the micrometer squarely around the measured feature and make sure the measuring faces contact the correct surfaces.

  4. Apply the selected force: Turn the thimble until the constant-force mechanism reaches the selected measuring-force setting and holds the value.

  5. Read the measurement: Check the LCD display at the selected inch or millimetre setting.

  6. Record the result: Use Hold/Data when required, or transfer the reading through the Digimatic SPC output to compatible inspection equipment.

  7. Check consistency: For repeat inspections, maintain the same measuring-force setting and measurement position across operators and parts.
