Product Description
The Mitutoyo 227-211-20 is a Series 227 ABSOLUTE Digimatic micrometer designed for measuring thin, soft and compressible materials with controlled low measuring force. Its 0–.6" (0–15.24 mm) range is suitable for workpieces that may deform when measured with excessive pressure.
The micrometer provides five selectable measuring-force settings: 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 N. Selecting the appropriate force helps provide consistent contact between the measuring faces and the workpiece, reducing variation caused by differences in operator pressure.
The 227-211-20 provides .00005" (0.001 mm) resolution and ±.0001" instrumental error. Its carbide-tipped, micro-lapped measuring faces have 0.3 µm flatness and 2 µm parallelism.
The non-rotating 6.35 mm diameter spindle helps prevent the measuring faces from twisting against delicate materials such as thin wire, film and rubber. The spindle provides .4" (10 mm) of travel per revolution.
A built-in constant-force mechanism in the ratchet friction thimble holds the selected measuring force when the mechanism reaches the set load. The ABSOLUTE linear scale retains the origin when the instrument is switched off, reducing the need for routine re-zeroing.
The LCD supports inch/mm conversion as well as Zero/ABS, Origin and Hold/Data functions. Low-voltage and counting-error alarms are provided, and the supplied product data specifies automatic power-off after approximately 20 minutes.
For digital inspection workflows, the micrometer provides Digimatic SPC output and supports compatible cables such as 937387 and 965013. One SR44 battery provides approximately three years of operation according to the supplied product information.
The 0–.6" model does not require a supplied standard bar; the origin can be established with the measuring faces closed. For larger soft parts, the Mitutoyo 227-213-20 covers .6–1.2" at the same 0.5–2.5 N low-force range. For firmer parts below .4", the Mitutoyo 227-215-20 provides a higher 2–10 N force range.

Who This Product Is Best For
The Mitutoyo 227-211-20 is suited to plastics and rubber manufacturers, packaging and paper laboratories, cable manufacturers, machine shops and quality-control teams inspecting thin and compressible materials.
Typical applications include:
-
Polymer film
-
Rubber sheet
-
Gasket material
-
Paper and label stock
-
Thin copper wire
-
Fine wire
-
Elastomer strips
-
Small moulded plastic components
-
Thin polymer parts
-
Flexible or compressible materials below 15.24 mm
The low measuring-force range is useful when normal micrometer pressure could compress the workpiece and produce a measurement that does not represent its unloaded dimension.
How to Use / How It Works
1. Clean the measuring faces
Remove dust, oil and particles from the measuring faces and workpiece before measurement.
2. Select the measuring force
Choose the lowest suitable setting from 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 or 2.5 N. For very soft or thin materials, start with the lowest appropriate force.
3. Set the origin
Clean the faces, gently close them and establish the origin at zero according to the instrument procedure.
4. Position the workpiece
Place the sample squarely between the carbide-tipped measuring faces. Keep thin sheet or film flat where the application requires it.
5. Apply the selected force
Turn the thimble until the constant-force mechanism reaches the selected load. Avoid applying additional manual pressure.
6. Read the measurement
Read the LCD in inch or metric mode. Use Hold/Data if the measurement needs to be retained.
7. Record or transfer the result
For connected inspection systems, use a compatible Digimatic SPC cable to transfer the reading to a PC or data-collection system.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the measuring range of the Mitutoyo 227-211-20?
The 227-211-20 measures from 0–.6" (0–15.24 mm).
What measuring force can I select?

Why use a low measuring force?
Thin and compressible materials can deform under higher contact pressure. A controlled low force can help provide more consistent measurements between operators.
Is a standard bar included?
No. The 0–.6" model does not require a supplied standard bar. The origin is established using the closed measuring faces.
What is the resolution?
The resolution is .00005" (0.001 mm).
What is the stated accuracy?
The instrumental error is ±.0001".
Does the spindle rotate?
No. The spindle is non-rotating and has a 6.35 mm diameter.
Does it support SPC data output?
Yes. The 227-211-20 provides Digimatic SPC output and supports compatible SPC cables for digital data collection.
