 Product Description

The Mitutoyo 227-213-20 is a Series 227 ABSOLUTE Digimatic micrometer designed for measuring larger soft and compressible parts with controlled low measuring force. Its .6–1.2" (15.24–30.48 mm) range is suited to components that can deform when excessive pressure is applied.

Five selectable measuring-force settings—0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 N—allow the operator to match the contact force to the workpiece. This makes the micrometer suitable for applications involving foam, silicone tube, PVC, moulded plastics, thick gaskets and elastomer components.

The 227-213-20 provides .00005" (0.001 mm) resolution and ±.0001" instrumental error. Its carbide-tipped, micro-lapped measuring faces provide 0.3 µm flatness, while 2 µm parallelism supports consistent contact across the measuring faces.

The non-rotating 6.35 mm diameter spindle helps keep the measuring faces aligned with the workpiece. The spindle provides .4" (10 mm) of travel per revolution.

A built-in constant-force mechanism in the ratchet friction thimble holds the selected measuring force when the mechanism reaches the set load. The ABSOLUTE linear scale retains the origin without requiring routine re-zeroing when the instrument is powered on.

The LCD provides inch/mm conversion along with Zero/ABS, Origin and Hold/Data functions. Low-voltage and counting-error alarms are also provided, while the supplied product data specifies automatic power-off after approximately 20 minutes.

For inspection and quality-control workflows, the micrometer provides Digimatic SPC output and can be connected using compatible cables such as 937387 or 965013. One SR44 battery provides approximately one year of operation according to the supplied Mitutoyo data.

A standard bar is supplied for origin setting at the lower end of the measuring range. For smaller parts below .6", the Mitutoyo 227-211-20 is a related low-force option. For applications requiring higher measuring force in overlapping ranges, the Mitutoyo 227-217-20 provides 2–10 N.

Who This Product Is Best For

The Mitutoyo 227-213-20 is suited to plastics manufacturers, rubber-product manufacturers, automotive trim suppliers, machine shops and quality-control teams measuring medium-sized soft or compressible components.

Typical applications include:

  • Foam and sponge blocks

  • Silicone tubing

  • PVC tube

  • Moulded plastic housings

  • Thick gaskets

  • Elastomer bushings

  • Polymer components

  • Soft or compressible industrial parts between approximately 15 and 30 mm

The low adjustable force is particularly useful when applying excessive measuring pressure could compress the workpiece and change the apparent dimension.

How to Use / How It Works

1. Clean the measuring faces and workpiece
Remove dirt, dust and other particles before measurement to help maintain consistent contact.

2. Set the origin
Use the supplied standard bar as the reference for establishing the origin at the appropriate starting dimension.

3. Select the measuring force
Choose one of the five settings: 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 or 2.5 N. Use a suitable force for the material and inspection requirement.

4. Position the workpiece
Place the component squarely between the carbide-tipped measuring faces without manually forcing the spindle against the part.

5. Apply the selected force
Turn the thimble until the constant-force mechanism reaches the selected measuring condition. The mechanism helps maintain the chosen load.

6. Read the measurement
Read the LCD in inch or metric mode. Use Hold/Data when a measurement needs to be retained.

7. Transfer inspection data
For digital inspection workflows, use a compatible Digimatic SPC cable to transfer the measurement to a connected system.
