PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Mitutoyo 227-216-20 is a digital outside micrometer designed for measuring 0.4–0.8" (10.16–20.32 mm) components where controlled measuring force is important.
Soft plastics, rubber-covered components and thin-walled metal parts can change dimension when excessive pressure is applied. The adjustable measuring-force mechanism allows the operator to select a defined contact load before taking the measurement.
Five measuring-force settings are available: 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 N. Once the selected force is reached, the built-in constant-force mechanism stops and holds the measurement contact. Using the same force setting across operators can help maintain consistent inspection conditions.
The micrometer provides 0.00005" (0.001 mm) resolution and ±0.0001" instrumental accuracy. Its carbide-tipped measuring faces have a micro-lapped finish, with 0.3 µm flatness and 2 µm parallelism. The Ø6.35 mm spindle is non-rotating, helping maintain stable alignment against round and flat workpieces.
The spindle advances 0.4" (10 mm) per revolution for rapid movement across the measuring range. A supplied standard bar is used to establish the origin at the lower end of the range. The ABSOLUTE linear scale retains the established origin after power-off, reducing the need for repeated re-zeroing.
The LCD supports inch/mm conversion, while functions include Zero/ABS, Origin, Hold/Data and ON/OFF. Low-voltage and counting-error alarms provide additional operating feedback, and automatic power-off can occur after approximately 20 minutes.
Digimatic SPC output allows measurements to be transferred to compatible inspection and data-collection systems using suitable SPC cables. The instrument uses one SR44 battery and is supplied with a fitted plastic case.
For smaller components below 0.4", the Mitutoyo 227-215-20 can be considered. For larger parts from 0.8–1.2", the 227-217-20 provides a higher measuring range with the same adjustable 2–10 N force concept. For very soft applications requiring lower contact force, the 227-211-20 provides a lower force range.

WHO THIS PRODUCT IS BEST FOR
The Mitutoyo 227-216-20 is suited to automotive component manufacturers, plastics and rubber manufacturers, machine shops, oil and gas workshops, maintenance teams and quality-control laboratories that inspect 10–20 mm components where measuring force can affect the result.
Typical applications include:
-
Nylon and PTFE bushings
-
Rubber seals and grommets
-
Thin-walled aluminium sleeves
-
Moulded plastic pins
-
Soft-metal fittings
-
Coated or finished components
-
Small shafts and cylindrical parts
-
Components that can deform under excessive measuring pressure
The adjustable force mechanism can be particularly useful when several operators inspect the same component and a consistent measuring condition is required.
HOW TO USE / HOW IT WORKS
-
Clean the measuring faces: Remove chips, dirt and residue from the carbide faces and the workpiece.
-
Set the origin: Place the supplied standard bar between the measuring faces and establish the reference position at 0.4".
-
Select the measuring force: Choose 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 N according to the material and inspection requirement.
-
Position the workpiece: Place the micrometer squarely around the measured feature.
-
Apply the selected force: Turn the thimble until the constant-force mechanism reaches the selected setting and holds the contact.
-
Read the measurement: Check the LCD display and use inch or millimetre units as required.
-
Record or transfer the result: Use Hold/Data for inspection records or transfer the measurement through the Digimatic SPC output to compatible equipment.
-
Maintain consistency: For repeated measurements, use the same force setting and measurement position across operators and parts.
