Product Description

The Mitutoyo 227-215-20 is a Series 227 ABSOLUTE Digimatic micrometer designed for measuring thin and easily marked parts with a controlled measuring force. Its 0–.4" (0–10.16 mm) range covers applications where consistent contact pressure is more important than relying on operator feel.

Five selectable force settings—2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 N—allow the measuring force to be matched to the workpiece. Lower settings can be used for delicate thin materials, while higher settings can be selected for firmer materials such as hard plastics and rigid strips.

The micrometer provides .00005" (0.001 mm) resolution and ±.0001" instrumental error. Its carbide-tipped, micro-lapped measuring faces have 0.3 µm flatness, while the non-rotating 6.35 mm diameter spindle helps reduce twisting when measuring wire and other slender parts.

The built-in ratchet friction thimble incorporates a constant-force mechanism that holds the selected measuring force. The ABSOLUTE linear scale retains the origin without requiring re-zeroing each time the instrument is powered on.

The LCD provides inch/mm conversion along with Zero/ABS, Origin, Hold/Data and other operating functions. Low-voltage and counting-error alarms help identify operating conditions that may affect readings.

For inspection workflows, the 227-215-20 provides Digimatic SPC data output and can be connected using compatible SPC cables such as 937387 or 965013. It operates from one SR44 battery, with approximately three years of battery life based on the supplied product data.

For a larger range at the same 2–10 N adjustable force, the Mitutoyo 227-216-20 covers .4–.8" (10.16–20.32 mm). For very low-force applications, the Mitutoyo 227-211-20 provides a lower 0.5–2.5 N measuring-force range.

Key Benefits

  • Adjustable 2–10 N measuring force with five selectable settings: 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 N.

  • 0–.4" (0–10.16 mm) measuring range for thin components and small workpieces.

  • .00005" (0.001 mm) resolution for detailed dimensional inspection.

  • ±.0001" instrumental error for the stated measuring range.

  • Constant-force ratchet mechanism helps maintain the selected measuring force during measurement.

  • Non-rotating spindle helps reduce twisting when measuring spring wire and other slender parts.

  • Carbide-tipped, micro-lapped measuring faces with 0.3 µm flatness.

  • ABSOLUTE linear scale retains the origin between uses without routine power-on re-zeroing.

  • Digimatic SPC output supports digital data collection and inspection workflows.

  • Inch/mm conversion allows the same instrument to be used with different measurement units.

  • Approx. three-year SR44 battery life based on the supplied product data.

Who This Product Is Best For

The Mitutoyo 227-215-20 is suited to machine shops, precision inspection teams, spring and wire manufacturers, aerospace MRO operations, automotive component workshops and calibration environments that measure thin parts up to 10.16 mm.

Typical applications include:

  • Brass and copper shim

  • Aluminium strip

  • Spring and music wire

  • Thin soft-metal washers

  • PTFE and nylon spacers

  • Thin sheet samples

  • Small machined components

  • Plastic and polymer parts where controlled measuring force is required

The adjustable force range makes the micrometer useful when the same inspection process involves materials with different resistance to measuring pressure.

How to Use / How It Works

1. Clean the measuring faces
Remove dirt, oil and particles from the measuring faces and workpiece before taking a reading.

2. Establish the origin
Because the 0–.4" model does not use a supplied standard bar, gently close the measuring faces and set the origin at zero according to the instrument procedure.

3. Select the measuring force
Choose one of the five available settings: 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 N. Select the force according to the material and inspection requirement.

4. Position the workpiece
Place the part squarely between the carbide-tipped measuring faces. Avoid excessive manual pressure.

5. Use the constant-force mechanism
Operate the thimble until the built-in mechanism reaches the selected measuring condition. The controlled force helps improve consistency between measurements.

6. Read and record the measurement
Read the LCD in the selected inch or metric unit. Use Hold/Data when required.

7. Transfer inspection data
For connected inspection systems, use the compatible Digimatic SPC output and cable to transfer measurement data.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the measuring range of the Mitutoyo 227-215-20?

The Mitutoyo 227-215-20 measures from 0–.4" (0–10.16 mm) with .00005" (0.001 mm) resolution.

What measuring force can be selected?

The micrometer provides five measuring-force settings: 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 N.

Does the 227-215-20 include a standard bar?

No. The 0–.4" model does not use a supplied standard bar. The origin can be established with the measuring faces closed according to the instrument procedure.

What is the accuracy?

The stated instrumental error is ±.0001", with a resolution of .00005" (0.001 mm).

Does the spindle rotate?

The spindle is non-rotating and has a 6.35 mm diameter. This can help reduce twisting when measuring wire and slender workpieces.

Does it support SPC data output?

Yes. The 227-215-20 provides Digimatic SPC output and supports compatible data cables for digital inspection workflows.

What is the battery life?

The supplied product data specifies approximately three years from one SR44 battery.

Which model should I choose for a larger measuring range?

The 227-215-20 covers 0–.4". The 227-216-20 covers .4–.8" (10.16–20.32 mm) with the same 2–10 N adjustable measuring-force concept.

Is there a newer -22 version?

Mitutoyo America lists a -22 version as a newer US listing. Product availability and regional model versions should be confirmed before ordering.
