Two-point bore gauges depend on the operator finding the true diameter by rocking the gauge, so readings can vary from person to person. The Mitutoyo 468-267 uses three self-centring anvils spaced at 120°, which locate on the bore automatically and measure the true inside diameter across a 1-1.2" (25.4-30.48 mm) range.
The contact points are TiN (titanium nitride) coated for durability and impact resistance, and they allow measurement right to the bottom of a blind hole. A ratchet stop applies constant measuring force, while the large LCD provides readings to 0.00005" / 0.001 mm with inch/mm switching. The instrument also provides zero/ABS setting, presetting, data hold and data output, along with low-battery and error alarms. Data output allows readings to be transferred to an SPC or data collection system, while an optional extension rod can be used for deeper holes.
For the best accuracy, keep the measuring head square to the bore axis, measure at more than one depth to check for taper or ovality, and allow the part and instrument to reach the same temperature before measuring. Because a three-point instrument must be set against a known diameter, a setting ring is required for origin setting.
